US authorizes Ukraine to hit Russia with long-range Western missiles – WSJ

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has lifted restrictions on Ukraine’s use of certain long-range missiles provided by Western allies to strike targets in Russia. The Wall Street Journal writes about this, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The new rules allow Ukraine to use British-made Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of more than 180 miles.

This will allow Kyiv to increase the radius of strikes on targets deep in Russian territory and increase pressure on the Kremlin.

It is noted that this decision coincided with Trump’s initiative to increase pressure on Moscow to force it to negotiate an end to the war, as well as with the intention to withhold the transfer of American Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

Ukraine has already used the Storm Shadow cruise missile provided by the UK: on Tuesday, it struck a Russian plant in Bryansk that produced explosives and rocket fuel. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this on social media, calling the attack a “successful defeat” that broke through the Russian air defense system.

Storm Shadow is a long-range cruise missile with stealth capabilities, jointly developed by the United Kingdom and France, which is usually launched from the air. With a range of over 250 km, it is slightly shorter than the range of the US Army’s surface-to-surface tactical missile systems, or Atacms.

At the same time, the WSJ noted that the decision to lift restrictions on long-range strikes against Russia by Western weapons was lifted after the authority to support such attacks was transferred from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to the commander-in-chief of U.S. forces in Europe, General Alex Hrynkiewicz, who also heads NATO.

At the same time, the White House has not confirmed whether it is ready to provide Kyiv with US Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of over 1,600 kilometers.
