US steps up intelligence in Greenland – WSJ

The US government has ordered its intelligence agencies to step up intelligence activities in Greenland.

The Wall Street Journal writes about this, citing its own sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the newspaper, last week several senior officials under the leadership of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard sent letters to the heads of intelligence agencies “with a focus on intelligence gathering.”

In particular, they were instructed to learn more about the Greenland independence movement and attitudes toward the extraction of American resources on the island.

In addition, US intelligence agencies should intensify their search for local supporters of US plans for Greenland.

According to the WSJ, this directive is one of the first concrete steps taken by the administration of US President Donald Trump towards the realization of the acquisition of Greenland, as he has repeatedly stated.

US plans for Greenland

During his first presidential term in 2019, Trump first proposed to buy Greenland. After taking office, he returned to this idea again. In his opinion, the United States needs the island “for economic security.” In addition, Trump did not deny that military or economic action could be taken against Greenland.

In response to Trump’s statements, the Danish government has strengthened the island’s defense. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she could not imagine the United States using military force to invade the island. She also noted that only the people of Greenland decide what they want.
