The United States imported chicken eggs from Russia for the first time in 32 years

In July 2025, the United States purchased chicken eggs from Russia for the first time since 1992. This is reported by Russian media with reference to data from the US statistical service, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the agency, the total cost of imports of chicken eggs from Russia amounted to 455 thousand dollars. Brazil ($8.8 million), Mexico ($3.9 million) and India ($933 thousand) remain the main suppliers of eggs to the United States.
At the beginning of this year, Americans faced a sharp rise in chicken egg prices due to the outbreak of bird flu. In January, the cost of eggs was 50% higher compared to the same period last year, Reuters reported, citing data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the research company NIQ, by the end of the month, a dozen eggs cost about $5.29, compared to $3.5 in January 2024.

Although egg prices in the United States have been declining for several months, according to July data, they were still 16.4% higher than last year. Due to the shortage of eggs caused by bird flu, the United States decided to expand imports.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in December 2024, more than 13 million chickens were destroyed or killed by bird flu, and in January the number reached another 14 million. According to the rules, farms are required to destroy all chickens if the virus is detected in at least one bird. At the beginning of January, there were just over 300 million chickens in the United States, well below the industry standard of one chicken for every person in the country. According to the US Census Bureau, the country is home to about 340 million people.

While buying eggs from Russia, the United States is also demanding that the European Union stop buying Russian oil.
