The US has lifted sanctions on Belavia and Lukashenko’s plane, but there is a caveat

4 November 22:37

Today, on November 4, the US Treasury Department announced the lifting of sanctions against the Belarusian state airline Belavia and one of the aircraft used by self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. This is stated in a statement by the press service of the US Treasury Department, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Sanctions have been in place since 2021

As noted, the restrictions against Belavia were imposed in accordance with US Presidential Decree 14038, which provides for sanctions against individuals and companies that support Lukashenko’s authoritarian regime and repression of civil society.

Now the company will be able to participate in financial and commercial transactions from which it was previously suspended.

Lukashenka’s airplane has also been eased

At the same time, the US Treasury Department lifted restrictions on the Bombardier Challenger 850 (registration number EW-301PJ), which, according to the Belarusian newspaper Dzerkalo, is regularly used by Belarusian officials and members of Lukashenko’s family.

It has also become known that the United States has issued a temporary license that allows operations with three more aircraft associated with Lukashenka’s entourage or the Slavkali company, which remains under sanctions.

These are the aircraft with tail numbers:

  • EW-001PA,
  • EW-001PB,
  • EW-001PH.

Temporary solution

The US side emphasizes that the easing of sanctions is temporary and does not mean a complete lifting of restrictions on the Lukashenko regime.

The decision applies only to specific operations and transactions necessary to ensure the safety or maintenance of air transport.
