Became a brand: Kherson watermelon received a geographical indication

The Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation has registered a new geographical indication – Kherson Watermelon. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Economy.

It will be carried by melons grown on sandy soils of the Tauride region on the territory of Skadovsky, Kherson, Kakhovsky districts of the Kherson region.

It is noted that Kherson watermelon is characterised by high sugar level, dense flesh. Watermelon rind is green with pale green stripes, flesh is from pink to deep red. Such a watermelon is extremely crisp and tasty.

“The registration of Kherson watermelon as a geographical indication is an important event for our agricultural sector. Watermelon grown on the sandy soils of the Tauride region has been recognised for its uniqueness and has become a symbol of sustainability and dedication of Ukrainian farmers who work even in difficult war conditions,” said Deputy Minister of Economy Vitaliy Kindrativ.

It is noted that this status provides producers with additional advantages, increasing their competitiveness in the domestic and international markets. Local communities will receive additional tax revenues, which will contribute to the economic development of the region. For consumers, it is a guarantee of high quality and safety of products.

The application for registration of the geographical indication was submitted by the public union “Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers”, whose representatives are now defending their native land from Russian occupiers at the front.

What is a geographical indication

Geographical indication is a place name identifying a product which originates from a certain geographical area and has a special quality, reputation or other characteristics mainly due to this place of origin, and at least one of the stages of production of which (manufacturing (extraction) and/or processing and/or preparation) is carried out in a certain geographical area.

To date, 3,133 geographical indications have been entered in the State Register of Ukraine. There are 37 objects registered directly under the national procedure, among which 29 geographical indications are exclusively for goods originating from the territory of Ukraine.

Examples of Ukrainian geographical indications: “Melitopol cherry”, “Krolevets rushniki”, “Petrikovka painting”, “Zakarpattya wine”, “Hutsul brynza”.
