The pollution of the Seim and Desna rivers was the main topic of today’s meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management.
MPs invited Svitlana Hrynchuk, the new Minister of Ecology, to the meeting to discuss the interim results of localising and eliminating the consequences of pollution caused by sewage.
According to Svitlana Hrynchuk, the pollutants entered Ukrainian rivers from a Russian sugar factory.
“Wastewater entering the Sejm has caused significant environmental damage, the consequences of which Ukraine has been dealing with for several weeks. The amount of damage in Chernihiv and Sumy regions exceeds UAH 405 million,” said Svitlana Grinchuk.
The contaminated water is now moving towards the Kyiv region.
According to scientists and the management of Kyivvodokanal, all treatment facilities in Kyiv region should be able to cope with the pollution.
According to Svitlana Hrynchuk, the concentration of hazardous substances is much lower than it was in the first days of their release into open water.
Kyivvodokanal has also stocked up on 120 tonnes of activated carbon and will use enhanced water treatment technology if the situation worsens.
