10 July 11:58

As a result of a heavy rainstorm on the night of July 10, Lviv and the surrounding villages suffered from large-scale flooding. The Shchyrka and Zubra rivers burst their banks, flooding residential areas, roads and parking lots. Some areas are still at risk due to the high water level. This was reported by the press service of the Lviv City Council, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The most affected areas are:

  • truskavetska, Kulparkivska, Aviatsionna streets in Lviv
  • st. John Paul II Avenue
  • t-14-16 highway Lviv – Medenychi – Pustomyty
  • sknyliv, Zubra, Sokilnyky villages.

Cars in the water: parking lots near houses turned into ponds

The situation is especially critical near the residential complex “Continent” in Sokilnyky, where the parking lot is flooded. According to Lviv City Council member Ihor Zinkevych, the cars were submerged in water that reached the hoods.

“You can’t drive across the Zubra River – the river has burst its banks, the road is flooded, and traffic is restricted. The parking lot near the Continent residential complex is flooded,” Zinkevich said.

Photos on social media show drivers trying to wade through, but some cars stall right on the road.

Traffic is restricted or hampered

Lviv police warn of partial traffic blockages in a number of areas and urge drivers to avoid flooded routes.

Public transportation is currently running as usual, but delays are possible due to flooded streets.

Rescue operations continue

A total of 38 rescuers and 7 units of equipment are working at the site. In the village of Sknyliv, rescuers had to rescue people and animals trapped in houses.

Specialists are also pumping water out of a flooded power substation.

According to the Lviv City Council press service, public transportation in Lviv is running as usual. Trolleybus No. 27 is temporarily turning around on Horodotska Street near the ATP-1 because of flooding on Aviatsiyna Street.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said that in some non-residential areas of Lviv there are places where the water reaches about three meters.

“There is a threat of flooding in parts of Frankivsk, Sykhiv and Zaliznychnyi districts. We ask residents to move their belongings from basements to a safe place, as well as to roll their cars away from underground parking lots and potentially dangerous areas,” Andriy Sadovyi wrote.

The press service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Lviv region reported that on the night of July 10, the Shchyrka and Zubra rivers burst their banks. As a result, water flooded streets, houses and cars in the villages of Sknyliv, Zubra and Sokilnyky.
