The Pecherskyi District Court in Kyiv has found former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov guilty of high treason and attempting to change the constitutional order by force. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. This was reported by the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“With the support of public prosecution by prosecutors… in the case of the former Prime Minister of Ukraine and his assistant, the court found them guilty in absentia of treason, dissemination of materials with public calls for a violent change in the constitutional order in Ukraine and calls for changing the borders of the state border of Ukraine,” the statement said.

The convict is hiding in Russia, so the sentence was passed in absentia.

By the decision of the Pechersk District Court, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine was found guilty of committing criminal offenses under Part 2 of Article 111, Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 109, Part 2 of Article 110, Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 436-2, Part 3 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

His assistant was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

What is known about the Azarov case

In March 2024, the Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment against Mykola Azarov and his assistant.

They were charged with the following charges:

  • high treason;
  • encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine;
  • calls for the overthrow of the constitutional order;
  • justification of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.

Azarov actively used his own channels and social media accounts to spread pro-Russian propaganda.

The former prime minister was assisted by two Ukrainian citizens: a current and a former employee of the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration in Kyiv.

What is known about Azarov

After the Revolution of Dignity, Mykola Azarov left Ukraine and is currently in Russia. Since 2014, he has been on the SBU’s wanted list.

In January 2024, law enforcement officers sent an indictment to the court in a case involving Azarov’s information work in favor of Russia.

In particular, in videos on Youtube and Russian media portals, Azarov justifies Russia’s armed aggression and occupation of part of Ukraine. He calls the events in Bucha a “fake,” calls for denazification and a violent change of the Ukrainian government, and assures that Putin’s special operation saved Donetsk from capture, “preventing this tragedy.”

It should be noted that this is not the first case against Azarov. In September 2023, an indictment against him and former President Viktor Yanukovych was sent to court for the Kharkiv agreements. By this document, in 2010, officials extended the stay of the Russian Black Sea Fleet on the territory of Ukraine for 25 years.
