The Moscow Arbitration Court has begun hearing the Bank of Russia’s lawsuit against the Belgian depository Euroclear in the amount of 18.2 trillion rubles.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Russian propaganda media.
The Central Bank of the Russian Federation’s statement of claim against Euroclear was received by the Moscow Arbitration Court on December 15. The Central Bank intends to recover losses from European banks related to the unlawful blocking and use of its assets.
The European Union and G7 countries have previously frozen about €300 billion in assets. In particular, the Belgian depository Euroclear holds €180 billion in frozen assets of the Russian regulator.
“Global campaign of retaliation”
As reported by Bloomberg, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation is threatening the European Union with a “global campaign of retaliation” to recover hundreds of billions of euros if the bloc uses Russia’s frozen assets.
The Russian Central Bank called the actions of the Belgian depository “illegal” and “making it impossible for the bank to dispose of its funds and securities.”
In a separate statement, it warned that it would challenge any unauthorized use of assets by the European Commission “in all available competent authorities, including national courts, judicial authorities of foreign states, and international organizations.”
Russia is demanding compensation for damages in the amount of the total value of its frozen assets, as well as additional income lost from them.
On December 11, 2025, the European Union adopted a change in the rules that simplifies the extension of the freeze on Russian assets.
