On 22 May, the Khmelnytsky City District Court granted all 50 applications for conditional release of convicts from serving their sentences for military service, which came from the Raikivtsi Correctional Colony. This was reported by the court’s press service, according to [Kommersant]
Within 24 hours, the convicts were to be taken to the Khmelnytsky District Military and Civilian Personnel Committee to conclude a contract and perform military service in the military unit assigned to them. At this stage, the convicts are accompanied by the servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine. The ex-convicts will serve exclusively in the special units at the military units.
In addition, the court established administrative supervision over the men for a period of one year, but not longer than until their discharge from military service. Such supervision will be carried out by the commanders of the military unit under which they will serve. Restrictions include a ban on staying outside the military unit’s location and travelling on personal business without the permission of the commander.
The vast majority of volunteers are young men, mostly convicted of theft. Most of them have no special skills for military service.
At the same time, as stated in the court’s report, there are a large number of people in the penal colony who do not want to be released on parole in this way.
