Criminal record instead of army: Odesa resident robbed a woman to avoid mobilisation

In Odesa, police detained an 18-year-old man who committed a robbery in order to obtain a criminal record and thus avoid possible mobilisation. This was reported by the local department of the National Police, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to the police, the guy noticed a woman with a purse leaving a store on the street. He followed her and snatched the property from the victim’s hands and then disappeared. The purse contained money, headphones and a phone, but the young man immediately threw everything away. The total damage caused to the citizen amounted to almost UAH 13 thousand.

During the arrest, the 18-year-old Odesa resident confessed to the crime and explained his actions by his desire to get a criminal record. According to him, he hoped that he would not be drafted into the Armed Forces with his criminal record.

“The young man faces a sentence of seven to ten years in prison. At our request, the court imposed a custodial measure of restraint on the suspect. We will establish the location of the stolen property during the investigation,”

– said police investigator Olha Lavryshchuk.
