The amount is staggering: former judge Tandir was allowed to leave the detention center on bail

On January 28, the Svyatoshinsky District Court of Kyiv extended the preventive measure against a former judge in the case of a fatal traffic accident and the death of a Ukrainian National Guard soldier. However, it allowed him to be released on bail.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to a comment from the court’s press service.

It is noted that this concerns the case of former judge of the Makariv District Court of Kyiv Region Oleksiy Tandir. In 2023, the former judge caused a traffic accident, resulting in the death of a National Guard soldier.

At the request of the prosecution and by decision of the Svyatoshinsky District Court, Tandir’s preventive measure in the form of detention was extended. However, the court only partially granted the prosecutor’s request.

The court’s decision allowed Tandir to be released on bail for the first time. The bail amount, under which the former judge will be able to leave the pre-trial detention center, was 119.88 million hryvnias.

On May 26, 2023, Oleksiy Tandir, driving a Lexus ES350, hit 22-year-old National Guard soldier Vadym Bondarenko a few minutes before the start of curfew. The accident occurred at a checkpoint at the entrance to Kyiv from the Zhytomyr highway. The National Guard soldier died on the spot from his injuries.

After the circumstances of the accident became public, Tandir was arrested and placed in a pre-trial detention center. It is believed that Tandir was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Among other things, he attempted to falsify the results of his medical tests.

It was only in August 2024 that Tandir was dismissed from his position as a judge of the Makariv District Court of the Kyiv Region. In total, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Interestingly, Tandir recently won a case against Ukraine in a lawsuit he filed with the European Court of Human Rights. The latter recognized that keeping Tandir in custody without setting bail allegedly violated the so-called European standards of freedom and security. In view of this, the ECHR awarded Tandir €2,100 in compensation and €250 in legal costs.
