Holiday despite the war: Kyiv lights up the country’s main Christmas tree on St. Sophia Square

5 December 20:31

In Kyiv, the lights on the country’s main Christmas tree have been lit on St. Sophia Square, a tradition that the capital has maintained even in wartime. The event was announced by Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who emphasized that both children and adults need the holiday, especially now, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

A holiday in the heart of the capital

This year’s 16-meter-high Christmas tree is artificial, just like last year. It is decorated with about 4,500 toys and illuminated with warm garlands, creating a calm and intimate atmosphere for the winter holiday. The decorations are inspired by the frescoes of St. Sophia of Kyiv, with soft colors and motifs that symbolize the continuity of Ukrainian traditions and the strength in silence.

According to Klitschko, the Christmas tree transforms the square into a “symbolic place of strength and light” that should bring a sense of celebration to Kyiv residents despite the anxieties and challenges of war.

The mayor also thanked the Ukrainian military, who, he said, are the reason why the capital can afford to create a festive atmosphere. He emphasized that the city continues to do everything possible to support the defenders.

The lighting of the main Christmas tree traditionally takes place on the eve of St. Nicholas Day and actually opens the winter holiday season.
