The air pollution observed in some regions of Ukraine may continue for several more days. This was reported by Natalia Ptukha, a forecaster at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, in an exclusive commentary to Komersant ukrainskyi

According to the expert, the phenomenon observed in most regions of Ukraine was air pollution, not a dust storm.

“A dust storm is when there are gusts of wind and a shaft of dust and sand. This is a dangerous phenomenon,”

– ptukha explained.

Such a dust storm occurred in the Caspian lowlands, she said, but it reached Ukraine in the form of dusting the atmosphere. In Ukraine, this dust has been supplemented by “native” dust from the southeastern regions, which was formed due to a prolonged drought.

“In addition, in our southeastern regions, the prolonged drought has created a completely dry soil layer. And wind gusts raised it as well. However, it cannot be called a full-fledged dust storm. Because there was no high concentration and wind speed in one region,”

– says the forecaster.

Natalia Ptukha says that the air will still be dusty in some places.

“Until Friday, we still have the possibility that the air in Ukraine may be dusty in many regions, except for the western ones. There will be atmospheric fronts there that cause occasional rains. Therefore, the dust will be washed out there, there are other air flows, and there will not be much dust coming there. But in other regions, with different intensity, with different concentrations, the dustiness of the atmosphere may recur in waves,”

– the forecaster predicted.
