The situation is escalating: the mayor of Kyiv calls for preparations for the worst-case scenarios

9 January 14:43

As a result of the Russian attack on the night of January 9 , about half of the apartment buildings in Kyiv —almost 6,000—remain without heating. Water supply interruptions have also been reported. This was announced by Mayor Vitali Klitschko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Reaction of the authorities

The mayor called on Kyiv residents who have the opportunity to temporarily leave the city for places with alternative sources of power and heat. According to him, city services are working in emergency mode, and weather conditions will remain difficult in the coming days.

How critical facilities are being supplied

Heat is being supplied to hospitals, maternity wards, and other social institutions using mobile boiler rooms. At the same time, energy companies are working to restore electricity and heat supply to residential buildings.

Assessment of the impact

Klitschko called the attack the most painful for the capital’s critical infrastructure. Damage to energy facilities led to large-scale power outages in the city and region.

What is known about the massive shelling on January 9

The main target of the strike was the capital region. Russia used drones and missiles, including the hypersonic Oreshnik, which struck the Lviv region.

  • Kyiv: four people were killed, including a medic who arrived at the scene of the strike; 25 were wounded.
  • Kyiv region: damage was reported in five districts, with five people wounded.
  • Cherkasy and Kirovohrad regions: private homes were damaged, and infrastructure was also damaged in the Cherkasy region.

Restoration work is ongoing. City authorities are urging residents to follow official announcements and, if possible, to use alternative places of residence until the heat supply is stabilized.
