Taras Kachka became the new trade representative of Ukraine: what is known about him

Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Taras Kachka has been appointed to a new position – from now on, he will also serve as Ukraine’s trade representative. This was announced by the government’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“The powers of the Trade Representative of Ukraine have been vested in the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, Taras Kachka,” the official statement said.
The Trade Representative is appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine upon the proposal of the Prime Minister. According to the government decision, the powers of this position may be vested in the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration.
What are the responsibilities of the Trade Representative of Ukraine?
The key tasks of the new trade representative include promoting Ukraine’s economic interests in European and global markets, as well as coordinating the activities of trade missions within foreign diplomatic missions.
His competencies also include interaction with the Verkhovna Rada, central executive authorities, advisory structures under the President, local governments, EU institutions and other international organizations.
In addition, the Trade Representative cooperates with Ukrainian and foreign enterprises and institutions.
What we know about Taras Kachka
Taras Kachka is a Ukrainian lawyer, public figure and civil servant who has played a prominent role in shaping Ukraine’s trade policy. He was born in 1979 in Kirovograd region.
Taras Kachka has a law and management education: he received a bachelor’s degree in law from the International University of Science and Technology (Kyiv), a master’s degree from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and also studied at the National Institute of Public Administration in Warsaw.
In 2014-2015, he held senior positions at the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, first as Vice President for Strategic Development, and later as Acting President.
He also has experience in the public sector, having worked at the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the Ministry of Justice (as Deputy Director of the Department for Legislative Adaptation), and as an entrepreneurship advisor at the State Fiscal Service.
In addition, Kachka worked in international business in the field of regulatory policy, managed the Ukrainian Media Center for Reforms and participated in the formation of tax policy as part of a special team at the Ministry of Finance.
Since September 2019, he has served as Deputy Minister for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture – Trade Representative of Ukraine. In this role, he was responsible for the development and implementation of state policy in the field of economic integration with the EU, foreign economic policy, and Ukraine’s cooperation with the World Trade Organization.
Kachka focused his efforts on protecting the economic interests of Ukrainian producers and promoting exports. He coordinated the activities of the departments responsible for trade policy, foreign economic activity, trade protection and economic cooperation with international organizations.
