Law enforcement officers detained an agent of the Russian special services who committed a terrorist attack in Odesa on Saturday, July 5.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The detainee is a previously convicted 22-year-old resident of Zaporizhzhia who was recruited through Telegram channels.

“As the investigation has established, on the instructions of the Russian special service, the agent planted a pre-prepared improvised explosive device (IED) under the car specified by the curator. To ensure online video broadcasting of the explosion, the suspect installed a phone with remote access for the enemy opposite the planned terrorist attack site,” the SBU said.

After the car bombing, the Russian agent tried to escape from Odesa region. However, he was tracked down and detained by the SBU and the National Police.

The suspect was served a notice of suspicion under part two of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act). He faces up to 12 years in prison.

According to the regional prosecutor’s office, the car was driven by an employee of a defense contractor. He survived, but was seriously injured. His car was completely destroyed.
