Trade between Kyiv and Chisinau: will the debate escalate into sanctions?
27 February 20:30
The Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture has stated that it has not received any official notifications about possible restrictions on Moldovan wine imports to Ukraine.
This was reported by NewsMaker , according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The ministry emphasized that there is currently no embargo on Moldovan wines on the Ukrainian market. Discussions that have appeared in the public sphere were described as technical consultations between relevant institutions.
What sparked the discussion
Earlier, the media reported that the Ukrainian government had allegedly prepared a draft resolution that would restrict imports of Moldovan wine, fresh grapes, ethyl alcohol, and distillates.
According to journalists, the explanatory note to the document stated that such measures could be a response to Moldova’s decision to suspend imports of Ukrainian poultry meat.
The issue was the detection of a banned substance, metronidazole, in animal feed.
Moldova’s reaction
The Moldovan ministry emphasized that it is in constant contact with the Ukrainian side and that the dialogue is taking place in a “constructive manner” to avoid steps that could harm producers or bilateral trade.
On February 12, after Prime Minister Alexander Munteanu’s visit to Kyiv, the parties agreed to set up a joint working group to resolve the situation.
Kyiv’s position
The Ukrainian side claims that its products comply with European safety standards.
Kyiv has also expressed its willingness to provide additional guarantees and conduct testing in internationally accredited laboratories.
