Trade war in aviation: Trump puts pressure on Canada over Gulfstream

30 January 07:48

US President Donald Trump has announced tough demands on Canada, stating that all Canadian aircraft certifications will be revoked and 50% tariffs may be imposed if Ottawa does not immediately certify American Gulfstream Aerospace business jets. The White House chief made the announcement on Thursday, January 29, on his social media platform Truth Social, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What is the essence of the ultimatum?

According to Trump, Canada is “unlawfully, illegally, and stubbornly” refusing to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 aircraft, which he called some of the most advanced in the world.

In response, the US is revoking the certification of Canadian aircraft, including the Bombardier Global Express, as well as all aircraft manufactured in Canada, until Gulfstream is fully certified.

“We are revoking the certification of Bombardier Global Express aircraft and all aircraft manufactured in Canada until Gulfstream receives full certification, which should have been granted many years ago,” Trump said.

Threat of tariffs

The US president accused Ottawa of effectively banning the sale of Gulfstream products on the Canadian market due to certification procedures. If the situation is not “immediately corrected,” Washington, according to him, will impose a 50% tariff on all Canadian aircraft sold in the US.

Context of trade pressure

This is not the first sign of escalation. Trump had previously threatened 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods in response to Ottawa’s possible trade agreement with Beijing, and also withdrew Canada’s invitation to the Peace Council. The current ultimatum deepens tensions between the United States and Canada and could have consequences for the North American aviation market.
