Tragedy on a reservoir in Kharkiv: two children died after falling through the ice

Two children died in a pond in Kharkiv after a group of minors fell through the ice. This was reported by the Kharkiv police, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The tragedy occurred at a quarry on Semen Kuznets Street. According to preliminary data, five young children and a 17-year-old boy fell through the ice at the same time.
The police are investigating the incident as intentional murder with a note “accident.”
How events unfolded
A random passerby witnessed the incident. The 40-year-old man jumped into the icy water to help the children.
He managed to pull out:
- boys aged 8 and 9
- girls aged 9 and 10.
However, two teenagers, aged 11 and 17, could not be saved.
According to local authorities, the older boy tried to help the younger children and drowned.
The work of rescuers
The bodies of the victims were recovered by divers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
Medics also provided assistance to a man who tried to save the children and dived into the icy water.
Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.
What is known about the causes
It is currently unknown why the children were on the reservoir.
Experts emphasize that due to unstable spring weather, the ice on reservoirs becomes extremely thin and dangerous.
Reaction of the authorities
The head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleg Synyegubov, urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of being on the ice.
According to him, even where the ice seems solid, it can pose a deadly threat.
