Tragedy in Mexico: mayoral candidate shot dead on live TV

Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, a candidate for mayor of Tequistepec in the Mexican state of Veracruz, was shot dead during a campaign event on the evening of May 11. The event was broadcast live on Facebook. In addition to her, three other people were killed and three people were injured. This was reported by the American TV channel CNN, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

The video shows candidate from the ruling party Morena greeting locals and walking down the street accompanied by supporters. The crowd is chanting slogans when a series of shots are heard.

“We are coordinating our actions, in particular with the Minister of Security, and providing all the necessary support during this electoral period, together with the authorities of the state of Veracruz,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said during a morning press conference the next day.

According to the human rights organization Data Cívica, a record 661 attacks on people or premises related to political activity were recorded in the country last year. Many of the victims held or ran for municipal office.

In May 2024, a mayoral candidate was killed during a campaign rally in the state of Guerrero. A few days later, the mayor of Cotia, Michoacán, was shot dead as she was returning home from the gym. In October, the newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo was assassinated less than a week after his election.
