Russia, which has been trying to invade Ukraine for almost four years, has found itself in a difficult economic situation. This was stated by White House President Donald Trump in an interview with Politico on the eve of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“Their economy is in dire straits, very dire straits,” the American president said.

Thus, in early December, the Russian Ministry of Finance reported an increase in the budget deficit for January-November 2025 to 4.276 trillion rubles, which is 11.8 times more than in the same period last year.

Trump also said that he is going to have another conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the near future and will talk to him “as long as he wants.”

“I think everything will go well with Putin [as well as Zelensky],” he said.

On Friday, it became known that Zelenskyy was going to meet with Trump to discuss ending the war with Russia at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on December 28. According to the Ukrainian president, he will bring with him an updated draft 20-point plan for a peaceful settlement. The document includes the creation of a demilitarized zone in Donbas, and the meeting is expected to focus on security guarantees from the United States.

Trump himself, however, did not show enthusiasm for the latter point in an interview.

“He won’t have anything until I approve it. So let’s see what he has,” the White House chief said. However, he expressed hope that the meeting with Zelensky would be productive.

on December 25, the President of Ukraine spoke with Trump’s negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, after which he announced “good ideas that can work for a common result and lasting peace.” In the 20-point plan Zelenskiy revealed on Wednesday, the issues of disputed territories and the management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remain unresolved.
