Trump announced a deal on Greenland and changed his mind about imposing tariffs

US President Donald Trump announced that during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, a framework for a future agreement on Greenland and the wider Arctic region was established. The American leader also said that he had decided not to impose tariffs on European countries, which were to take effect on February 1. Trump wrote about this on the social network Truth Social, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What Trump said after meeting with NATO Secretary General

According to the US president, the talks with Mark Rutte were “very productive” and allowed to outline the basis for further agreements.

“Based on a very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we have established a framework for a future agreement on Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region. This decision, if adopted, will be great for the US and all NATO countries. Based on this understanding, I will not impose tariffs that were to take effect on February 1,” Donald Trump said.

Who will participate in further negotiations

The US president also said that additional discussions are ongoing regarding the Golden Dome project in relation to Greenland.

According to him, the following people may be involved in the negotiation process:

  • Vice President Jay D. Vance;
  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio;
  • Special Envoy Steve Witkoff;
  • other senior US administration officials.

“Further information will be provided as discussions progress,” Trump added.

Why the US abandoned tariffs

The decision not to impose tariffs came as a surprise, as Donald Trump had previously announced the introduction of 10% tariffs against a number of European countries from February 1, with a further increase to 25% from June 1.

This included Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.

At the time, the US president claimed that these countries were allegedly hindering Washington’s attempts to strengthen its influence in the matter of Greenland. The current statement indicates a change in approach and an attempt to resolve the issue diplomatically in coordination with NATO.
