US President Donald Trump has said that security guarantees for Ukraine may include a military component. He said this during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, which was broadcast by the White House, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
When asked by journalists whether security guarantees could include the presence of the US military in Ukraine, Trump said that there are no specifics at the moment, but the US will not stand aside.
“But we will be involved,” he emphasized.
Trump emphasized that Washington would work with both Ukraine and Russia to achieve a lasting peace.
“We will work with Ukraine. We’re going to work with everybody, and we’re going to make sure that if there is a peace, it’s a long-term peace. We are not talking about a two-year peace, after which we will be back in chaos. We will make sure that it works,” the American leader said.
He also confirmed that broader talks with European leaders on potential guarantees for Ukraine will take place in the near future.
“We are meeting with seven major leaders of major countries, and we will talk about this. All of them will be involved. As for security, the assistance will be significant. Europe is the first line of defense, but the United States will also help,” Trump added.
Despite his statements about “protection,” Trump did not provide specific details about possible guarantees, including those based on NATO’s Article 5. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the United States would be able to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees.
“For our part, we are committed to providing good protection. I think we will succeed,” the American president concluded.
