U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that U.S. and Ukrainian Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy may meet next week. It is likely to take place in New York, where the UN General Assembly is holding a regular meeting. This was reported by AFP and LBC International.
According to Rubio, the head of the White House remains hopeful that a peace agreement will be reached with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Trump has had numerous calls with Putin, numerous meetings with Zelensky, including possibly next week in New York,” the secretary of state said during a visit to Israel.
Previous meetings between Trump and Zelenskiy
The last meeting between the presidents took place in August this year in the United States. It was Zelenskyy’s second trip to Donald Trump, and it was much warmer than the first, in February, when the talks ended in a scandal.
Back then, the US vice president publicly complained about Zelenskyy’s appearance, and Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of “not wanting peace.” Subsequently, the tension was resolved through diplomatic channels.
Since then, the two presidents have met twice more – during the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis in Italy and at the NATO summit in the Netherlands.
Telephone contacts
In addition to personal talks, Trump repeatedly called Zelenskyy after key international events. In particular, after the summit with Putin in Alaska, as well as on September 4 this year.
A possible meeting in New York could be the next stage in the dialogue between the two presidents and give a new impetus to the discussion of peace initiatives.
