US President Donald Trump wants an agreement to end Russia’s war against Ukraine to be reached by August 8.
This was stated by John Kelly, a senior US diplomat at the UN, during a speech at the Security Council, Reuters reports, "Komersant Ukrainian".
“Both Russia and Ukraine must agree on a ceasefire and a lasting peace. It’s time to make a deal. President Trump has given a clear signal: it must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to take additional steps to ensure peace,” Kelly said.
According to him, the Trump administration is considering various diplomatic avenues that could facilitate the start of direct negotiations between the parties. These include not only a ceasefire, but also further security guarantees, the participation of international partners, and possible mediation.
Trump’s peace initiatives
Since the beginning of his presidential campaign, Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he can “end the war in Ukraine quickly,” but has not yet publicly announced a clear plan. After being elected president in 2024, he began to more actively promote the idea of a peaceful settlement, stating the need for a “new global approach to security” and “protecting American interests without protracted conflicts.”
At the same time, his statements are causing concern among Ukraine’s allies, especially given the lack of specifics on the terms on which he envisions a “deal” between Kyiv and Moscow. The Ukrainian side has repeatedly emphasized that peace is possible only after the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the country.
Against the backdrop of these statements, tensions persist, both in the diplomatic community and among military observers.
