During a visit to Rwanda, Polish President Andrzej Duda commented on US presidential candidate Donald Trump ‘s statements about ending the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours” if he wins the 2024 election and said that the American politician would be able to fulfil his promise. At a press conference, the Polish president was asked what he thought of Trump’s words that he would quickly end the war in Ukraine if he became US president again. In response, Duda said that Trump has always kept his promises.
“From my personal experience as the President of the Republic of Poland, who once worked with President Donald Trump: what he promised me was fulfilled (…). I can say: yes, President Trump keeps his word, if he says something, he takes it seriously,”
– Duda said.
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed doubts that Ukraine would be able to de-occupy Crimea. According to him, the Crimean peninsula, which Russia seized in 2014, eight years before the full-scale invasion, “is a special place… including for historical reasons”.
The end of the war according to the “Trump” scenario
It is important to note that over the past year, Donald Trump, who hopes to return to the presidency, has made several statements that he will be able to quickly end the war in Ukraine.
In March 2023, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours” if he managed to return to the presidency. He noted that he himself had initiated the military strengthening of Ukraine by providing defence support to the country, and was convinced that if he were to become president, Putin would not dare to launch a full-scale invasion.
In his statement of 16 January 2024, Donald Trump also noted that he gets along “well” with Vladimir Putin and considers this “positive, not negative”. He claims that he can “solve this problem quickly” through dialogue with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.
Trump has also stated that if Russia does not stop, he will arm Ukraine. If Kyiv does not comply with the halt, he will take back the weapons supplied by his allies.
It should be noted that the American politician also emphasised that he would not have allowed the war to happen at all if he had been president. He claimed that he could reach a “fair deal” for all parties. In his view, Ukraine would have to give up certain parts of its territory without a fight.
President Zelenskyy repeatedly responded to Trump’s statements by claiming that he could convince him in 24 hours why peace with Putin was impossible. The president has invited Trump to Kyiv and expressed a desire to learn his “magic formula” for peace in Ukraine.
