US President Donald Trump has announced the start of firings of federal officials amid the shutdown of the US administration. “The process of final firings has already begun,” Trump told reporters at the White House in Washington on Sunday, October 5, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing DW.
“It’s all because of the Democrats. The Democrats are responsible for the loss of many jobs,” the Republican added, after which he abruptly changed the subject without specifying the details of the layoffs.
Thousands of officials without salaries
Due to the budget shutdown, about 750,000 federal employees have been sent on unpaid furloughs. Exceptions were made for life-support services, such as air traffic control, police, border guards, and emergency medical services. From the very beginning, Trump threatened massive layoffs in the event of a protracted shutdown.
The shutdown officially began on October 1 after the US Congress failed to agree on a temporary budget again. Since then, there have been no negotiations between Republican and Democratic leaders. Representatives of the opposition have stated that they do not intend to give in on the issue of further government support for the health insurance program for the poor, known as Obamacare.
