1 April 21:38

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is “absolutely” considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO.

He made this remark in an interview with Reuters , according to [Kommersant].

According to the American leader, he may officially announce his position during an address to the nation on April 1 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time (4:00 a.m. Kyiv time).

What to expect from the address

Earlier, the White House announced that the president’s speech would contain “important news regarding Iran.”

However, Donald Trump himself stated that he would devote a significant portion of the speech to criticizing the North Atlantic Alliance.

He also noted that he plans to publicly express his strong disagreement with NATO’s activities.

Allies’ reaction

Such statements have caused concern among European allies, especially against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

A U.S. withdrawal from NATO could radically alter the security architecture in Europe, as the United States is the Alliance’s key military power.

Operation against Iran

The president’s statement came amid an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

The U.S. and Israel are conducting a military operation against Iran, and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense.

Earlier, Donald Trump stated that one of the reasons for considering the U.S. withdrawal from NATO is the Alliance’s lack of support for the operation against Iran.

UK reaction

Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to the U.S. president’s statement, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to
to NATO.

He also stated that the UK will not allow the country to be dragged into war.
