Trump threatens BRICS countries with additional 10% tariffs

US President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of an additional 10% duty on goods from all countries that join the “anti-American policy” of the BRICS bloc. This decision was announced as the leaders of the participating countries began the summit in Rio de Janeiro, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Reuters.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump did not specify what exactly he meant by “anti-American policies” of the BRICS. He only emphasized that there would be no exceptions to this policy. The threat came a few hours after the summit participants issued a joint statement criticizing the US tariff policy.

The Trump administration is trying to finalize dozens of trade agreements with various countries by July 9, the deadline for the introduction of “retaliatory tariffs.” This puts additional pressure on America’s international partners and could dramatically change global trade.

The BRICS summit is taking place against the backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions and fragmentation of international relations. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva compared the bloc to the Cold War Non-Aligned Movement, emphasizing that the BRICS is the heir to those countries that refused to choose sides in a polarized world.

The expansion of the bloc has significantly increased its geopolitical influence. In addition to the founders – Brazil, Russia, India and China – South Africa joined the group, and last year Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the UAE joined. Another 30 countries have expressed interest in participating, making the BRICS a powerful alternative to Western institutions.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping decided not to attend in person, sending his prime minister instead. Vladimir Putin is participating online due to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court. Nevertheless, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are present at the summit.

The BRICS leaders represent more than half of the world’s population and 40% of its economic output. Lula da Silva emphasized that if international governance does not reflect the new multipolar reality of the 21st century, it is up to the BRICS to help update it.

In a joint statement, the summit participants condemned the attacks on Iran’s “civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities,” calling them a violation of international law. They also expressed “grave concern” over the fate of the Palestinian people due to Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The leaders supported the creation of a BRICS Multilateral Guarantee Initiative under the New Development Bank to reduce financing costs and stimulate investment in member countries. This could become an alternative to traditional Western financial institutions.

Trump’s threats create additional tension for countries considering cooperation with the BRICS. Indonesian Senior Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto plans to fly from Brazil to the United States to participate in tariff negotiations, which demonstrates the complexity of the current geopolitical situation.
