US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the US Navy may begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safety of shipping, writes "Komersant Ukrainian".
The head of state also said that he had instructed the US Development Finance Corporation to begin insuring political risks and providing financial guarantees for all maritime trade passing through the Persian Gulf at a very reasonable price.
“This service will be available to all shipping companies. If necessary, the US Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said, adding that the United States will ensure the free flow of energy around the world “no matter what.”
The Strait of Hormuz is the most important energy artery on the planet: about 20% of the world’s oil supplies and up to 30% of liquefied natural gas pass through it. Tensions in the region have risen sharply since the start of the Israeli and US military operation against Iran on February 28. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to attack any ship that attempts to cross the strait. At least five tankers have already been attacked. Against this backdrop, oil and gas prices have skyrocketed.
