US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending sanctions against Russia for one year, which were imposed due to its aggression against Ukraine. The decision concerns the state of emergency, which is the legal basis for the entire US sanctions policy towards Russia.

This was reported by [Komersant], citing the relevant decree.

The US has extended key sanctions against Russia

In his decree, Donald Trump stated:

“I am extending the state of emergency declared by Executive Order No. 13660 for one year.”

This regime was introduced in 2014 after Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine’s Crimea.

The document emphasizes that Russia’s actions:

“continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”

The sanctions will remain in effect until at least 2027

The sanctions regime was set to expire on March 6, 2026. Its extension means that all restrictions against Russia will remain in effect for at least another year.

Annual renewal is a necessary procedure to ensure that the sanctions remain legally valid.

What US sanctions are in place against Russia

The sanctions regime, based on Executive Order No. 13660 and subsequent documents, provides for a wide range of restrictions.

Key sanctions include

  • personal sanctions against Russian officials, oligarchs, and Vladimir Putin’s inner circle;
  • restrictions on Russia’s access to Western technology and finance;
  • a ban on the import and export of strategic goods;
  • restrictions on transactions involving Russian sovereign debt;
  • sanctions against the Russian energy sector.

These measures significantly limit Russia’s economic opportunities.

Sanctions related to Russia’s war against Ukraine

The US sanctions regime was introduced in response to:

  • the occupation of Crimea in 2014;
  • aggression against Ukraine;
  • Russia’s recognition of the so-called “DPR” and “LPR”;
  • the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Subsequently, the sanctions were repeatedly expanded.

Russia is trying to get the sanctions lifted

The Kremlin has repeatedly stated its desire to achieve the lifting of sanctions.

According to Russian officials, the restrictions have allegedly caused significant damage to American businesses.

At the same time, the US notes that the sanctions will remain in force as long as Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine.

The US may tighten sanctions

The White House has previously stated that it may impose additional sanctions against Russia.

Further decisions will depend on how the situation develops and what Moscow does.

The continuation of sanctions demonstrates that the US maintains a tough stance on Russian aggression against Ukraine.
