Trump threatened Canada with a 100% tariff for a trade agreement with China

The US will impose 100% tariffs on all exports from Canada if Ottawa signs a trade agreement with China, President Donald Trump said.

“If Canada signs a deal with China, all Canadian goods and products entering the US will immediately be subject to a 100% tariff,” he wrote on Truth Social, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The US president also issued a stern warning to Canada about the possible consequences of an agreement with China: “China will eat Canada alive, completely absorb it, including destroying its businesses, social structure, and way of life as a whole.” Trump made this statement after Beijing and Ottawa reached an agreement last week to reduce trade barriers and restore ties.

During a recent visit to China, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called China a “reliable and predictable partner” and, on the sidelines of the Davos Economic Forum, called on European leaders to attract investment from the country, which is the world’s second-largest economy.

Trump suggested that China would try to use Canada to circumvent US tariffs. “If Governor Carney ( Trump is hinting that Canada is the “51st state” of the US under his control) thinks he can turn Canada into a “transit point” for China to ship goods and products to the United States, he is deeply mistaken,” the US president wrote.

Currently, the US tariff on Canadian goods that are not included in the list of exceptions under the USMCA trade agreement is 35%, with different rates applying to certain industries, such as steel and aluminum.
