Trump is losing interest in the war in Ukraine – media reports

16 March 00:21

The peace process between Ukraine and Russia, mediated by the United States, has reached an impasse. Washington’s priorities have shifted toward the conflict with Iran, which has already led to pauses in negotiations and delays in the delivery of critically important weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

This is reported by [Komersant], citing the Financial Times.

Washington’s Shift in Focus

According to the FT, due to the escalation in the Middle East, the United States has effectively suspended its active participation in the negotiation process regarding Ukraine.

The next round of meetings, scheduled for early March, did not take place, and a new date has not yet been set. European diplomats note that this shift in focus is extremely dangerous for Kyiv.

“The Middle East has seriously shifted political attention away from Ukraine. For us and for Ukraine, this is a disaster,” the publication quotes one EU diplomat as saying.

Shortage of Air Defense Systems and Ammunition

In addition to political support, the White House’s shift in priorities has undermined Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

According to sources, deliveries of air defense systems will be delayed because the U.S. is prioritizing other clients.

EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas confirmed the existence of the problem.

“This is certainly a problem, because there is actually competition for the same assets, both in the Middle East and in Ukraine,” Kaja Kallas told the FT.

The Kremlin’s stance and the “pause” in dialogue

Russia is taking advantage of the situation, reaping windfall profits from rising oil prices and reduced sanctions pressure.

The Kremlin openly states that the American side is currently preoccupied with other issues.

“There has indeed been a pause in the negotiations. The Americans have other priorities, and that is understandable,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, adding that Russia continues to advance on the front lines to achieve its goals.

Status of the Negotiation Process

It should be noted that peace talks regarding Ukraine are in a “danger zone” due to the U.S. shifting its focus to the conflict in the Middle East.

Additionally, Moscow’s hardline stance regarding European countries’ participation in the dialogue has come to light. The Kremlin responded to this proposal with profanity.

At the same time, the Ukrainian side and international experts view Russia’s actions with skepticism, noting that Russian dictator Putin never wanted genuine negotiations or a complete end to the war, using diplomacy merely as a tool to avoid sanctions.
