US President Donald Trump has told European leaders that the United States is ready to provide a security guarantee for Ukraine.
This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing anonymous government sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the newspaper, the US president made the statement during a telephone conversation with EU leaders on board Air Force One on his way back from the Anchorage summit. The nature of the guarantees was not specified, but Trump emphasized his increased readiness for such commitments after talks with Vladimir Putin.
On Saturday, CNN reported that Trump discussed with EU leaders security guarantees for Ukraine in the format of Article 5 of the NATO charter, which provides for a collective response in the event of aggression. It is noted that such an agreement can be implemented in the event of a peace agreement. The parties to the agreement will be European countries and the United States, the text says. CNN clarifies that NATO will in no way participate in providing guarantees to Ukraine.
