Ukraine “loves” the latest US proposal aimed at achieving peace in Russia’s war against Ukraine, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet read it. This statement was made by US President Donald Trump on Sunday, December 7, answering questions from journalists on the sidelines of the Kennedy Center Prize in Washington, D.C., "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing DW.
“After last week’s talks, we spoke with President (of the Russian Federation – Ed.) Putin and we spoke with Ukrainian leaders, including President (of Ukraine – Ed .) Zelensky. And I have to say that I’m a little disappointed that President Zelensky has not yet read the (latest peace) proposal, as of a few hours ago,” Trump complained.
“His people (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – Ed.) love this (peace proposal – Ed. ), but he hasn’t read it. Russia agrees with him. You know, Russia would prefer to get the whole country, if we think about it. But I think Russia agrees. However, I am not sure that Zelenskyy agrees with him,” he said.
Zelensky on his conversation with Vitkoff and Kushner
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke on his Telegram channel on the evening of December 7 about a telephone conversation with US Presidential Special Envoy Steven Vitkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner that took place the day before. “The American envoys are aware of Ukraine’s key positions, and the conversation was constructive, albeit difficult,” the Ukrainian leader emphasized.
Zelenskyy added that Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Rustem Umerov and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Hnatov, who represented the Ukrainian delegation at the talks in Miami, would inform him of the results, and he, in turn, is going to talk to European leaders at meetings in Brussels and London.
Earlier, on December 6, US Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said that the agreement to end the war in Ukraine is “really close” to being signed, and its fate depends on resolving two main issues: the future of Donbas and the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. “If we resolve these two issues, I think everything else will go pretty smoothly,” Kellogg said.
How much of Ukraine’s territory is controlled by Russia
According to Reuters, Russia currently controls 19.2 percent of Ukraine’s territory, including the annexed Crimea, the entire Luhansk region, more than 80 percent of Donetsk region, about 75 percent of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, and parts of Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Dnipro regions.
According to the initial US proposals, ZNPP should be restored under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and electricity should be distributed between Russia and Ukraine.
On December 8, the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are expected to meet in London to agree on further actions for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine following the talks between the Ukrainian and US delegations in Miami.
