Trump postpones blocking TikTok in the US again: what is known about the agreement with China

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that once again postponed the ban on the social network TikTok. The relevant document appeared on the White House website, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

According to the decision, the blocking is postponed until December 16, 2025.

During this period, federal agencies are prohibited from taking action against TikTok under a law that recognizes the platform as a national security threat due to its origin and ties to China.

This is the fourth postponement of the blocking of the popular service in the United States.

The agreement between the US and China

The day before, on September 16, it became known that Washington and Beijing had agreed on a framework agreement to transfer ownership of the US division of TikTok to a group of US investors.

According to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the final decision is to be made by President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on September 19.

How the idea of a ban came about

The story of restrictions on TikTok dates back to 2024. Back then, President Joe Biden signed a law requiring the parent company ByteDance to sell the American part of the business within nine months, otherwise TikTok would be banned in the United States. The Department of Justice said that the social network posed a “threat of enormous proportions” because it could spread propaganda and collect user data.

ByteDance denied the allegations. The company’s CEO Shou Ji Chu emphasized that the data of American users is stored on Oracle servers and is not accessible to the Chinese authorities.

Court battles and the first ban

In January 2025, ByteDance lost the court case, and the law mandating the sale of TikTok came into force.

on January 18, the app even temporarily disappeared from the App Store and Google Play in the United States.

However, after his inauguration, Donald Trump promised to review the situation, and the service resumed operations a few hours later.

What’s next

Currently, TikTok has received another delay, but the final future of the platform depends on negotiations between Washington and Beijing. If the deal to sell the US segment is confirmed on September 19, TikTok may avoid a permanent block in the US.
