World War III: to be or not to be. The Role of Turkey and Israel in this History

30 July 2024 14:46

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened Israel with an invasion. on 28 July, at a party meeting of his political party, he said that his country must be “very strong” so that Israel could not put pressure on Palestine. Without specifying what he meant, he also mentioned Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh. Israel, in turn, threatened Erdogan with the death penalty. Do these statements mean that the world is on the verge of World War III? And why does Donald Trump call himself the only person who can contain the conflict in the Middle East? Komersant ukrainskyi looked into the matter.

The statement of the Turkish President shocked the world. After all, Erdogan said in a rather ambiguous way that his country was ready to “enter” Israel.

“Just as we entered Karabakh, just as we entered Libya, we can do the same with them [Israel – ed. There is no reason why we cannot do it. We just need to be strong so that we can take these steps,”

– said Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Although Erdogan spoke in a veiled manner and did not give specifics about any military operations in the war between Israel and Gaza, he did intensify his rhetoric against Israel.

Turkey is losing to Israel

Therecan be no question of any Turkish invasion of Israel, Ukrainian military expert Ivan Stupak explains for Kommersant.

“Turkey is a NATO member state, and Erdogan will have to play by the rules of the alliance, no matter what kind of dictator he is. Secondly, the United States is a great ally of Israel. Turkey will not want to quarrel with the United States. Even though the US is currently in a weak international position. And Turkey is also connected to America, because, in particular, it is trying to get modern aircraft.”

When President Erdogan says “here we are, in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia”, it is not proportionate at all, the military expert adds.

“When they broke the Armenian army, which is less technologically advanced, not advanced, does not have the same number and motivation, with their Turkish bayraktars, of course, it was a cakewalk. This will not happen in Israel. This is a high-tech country, with its modern American aircraft, air defence system, tanks and other equipment.”

Ivan Stupak

Moreover, the military expert argues, Israeli cyber forces will completely disintegrate Turkey in cyberspace. And the final argument, according to Ivan Stupak, is Erdogan’s desire to use intensified rhetoric against another country to cover up his problems.

“It’s a classic dogma: if you have problems in your country, economic problems, start a war. Then people immediately forget about all the problems, and everyone, including the government, starts working for the war. That’s how you hide your economic miscalculations.”

Ivan Stupak

The economic situation in Turkey is really very difficult now. The lira is constantly going down, the expert adds.

Israel’s tough reaction

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz responded to Erdogan’s threat. On the X network, he noted that the Turkish president is following the path of Saddam Hussein by threatening to attack Israel. At the same time, the Israeli Foreign Ministry called on Erdogan to remember how it ended.

Let me remind you that Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of crimes against humanity.

Trump as a peacemaker

The day before, US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that conflicts in the Middle East could escalate into World War III. And the reason could be his loss in the 2024 US elections. The former president did not provide a clear plan to end the conflict in the Middle East.

It is also known that on 26 July, Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It was their first meeting in the former president’s capacity.

After speaking with Netanyahu, the former White House chief of staff criticised Harris for allegedly disrespecting Israel and said he had asked Netanyahu how a Jew could vote for Democrats.

According to CNN, this meeting gave Trump and Netanyahu a chance to reset their relationship amid the war between Israel and Hamas and the 2024 election cycle.

Time will tell whether the statements of certain leaders can cause World War III. However, the actions of the Russian Federation have already unleashed the next World War, says Russian-American historian Yuri Felshtinsky.

In his works and interviews, the author has repeatedly drawn attention to Russia’s aggressive foreign policy, especially in the context of the annexation of Crimea and the war in Ukraine.

He believes that the aggressive policy of the Putin regime and the desire to regain influence in the post-Soviet space pose a significant threat to international security. He is convinced that the West must take tougher measures to contain Russia and avoid a global conflict.
