Origin of the holiday: what does the Trinity symbolize
In pre-Christian times, the Trinity fell just in time for the active flowering of nature. It used to be believed that greenery was endowed with healing properties, so during the festivities people honored nature, the spirits of plants, forests, and water, hence the second name – Green Holidays.
Trinity is a holiday dedicated to the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles in the form of tongues of fire. This day is also considered the day the Christian church was founded. However, the tradition of honoring nature did not lose its relevance after the adoption of Christianity. Believers still continue to decorate their homes with greenery, consecrate them in church, and honor the Holy Spirit.
Trinity in 2025: when are the Green holidays celebrated according to the new calendar
Trinity is a holiday that does not have a fixed date of celebration, as it is closely related to Easter. The Day of the Holy Trinity is celebrated on Sunday, the fiftieth day after Easter, which is why this day is also called Pentecost. Due to the fact that the date of Easter is calculated through a complex astronomical and liturgical calculation, the Green Feasts are also celebrated on different dates each year.
In 2025, the date of the Trinity celebration will be somewhat special: it will be the same for both Orthodox and Catholics, as Easter was also celebrated on the same day, April 20. Thus, according to the new Julian calendar, Trinity Day in 2025 will fall on Sunday, June 8.
What to bring to church on Trinity Sunday
On this day, it is customary to go to church to honor the Holy Trinity, bring baskets of herbs for consecration, and then bring them home as a talisman. On Trinity Day, homes and churches are decorated with branches of maple, oak, linden, fragrant herbs, and various flowers. Greenery symbolizes spiritual awakening, peace, and God’s blessing.
The following herbs and products are commonly included in a festive basket:
- Mint, lovage, thyme, and wormwood: after being consecrated, these herbs are believed to be healing and to help protect the home;
- Maple, linden, and oak branches: symbolize life force;
- Bread, honey, and salt: brought as a thanksgiving to God.
Consecrated greens are brought home and kept throughout the year: laid out by the door, placed near icons, and used for illness.
What not to do on the Green Feast
Just like during other religious holidays, there are a number of rules and prohibitions on Trinity Day that are important to follow in order not to bring disaster on yourself and your family. These prohibitions have both religious and folklore backgrounds.
You can’t work on Trinity Day:
- Physically work and do household chores: on this day, it is a sin to wash, sew, clean, or do any household chores or hard labor;
- Gardening: It is forbidden to dig, plant, or hoe, as the land is considered holy on this day;
- Cutting down or breaking trees and bushes: you should be especially careful with willow trees, because according to popular beliefs, this tree becomes a home for the souls of the dead, and the spirits of nature have settled in the trees, which should not be disturbed on this day;
- Come to the cemetery: Trinity is a holiday of the living, so on this day you should not go to the cemetery and visit the dead;
- Going tothe forest: it is believed that during the Green holidays the forest comes to life, so you can meet nymphs and other forest spirits there;
- Swimming in water: according to popular belief, mermaids swim in the water on Green Holidays and can pull you underwater, so you should refrain from swimming on this day;
- Organize loud celebrations and festivities: Trinity is a time for prayer and spiritual rest, so you should avoid feasts and large-scale celebrations;
- Quarreland swear: all the negative things that will be said on this day will come back to you in a bigger way.
