Three Ukrainian women continue to compete at Wimbledon: who has the best chance of winning?

5 July 2024 09:39

On the fourth day of Wimbledon 2024, three Ukrainian tennis players played in the second round of the women’s singles with the participation of three Ukrainian tennis players: Marta Kostiuk, Daria Snigur and Elina Svitolina. It was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"

Marta Kostiuk opened the day with an exciting match against Australian Daria Saville. The match lasted 3 hours and 12 minutes and became a real thriller. Kostiuk lost the first set 4-6, but managed to turn the tide in the second set, winning two match points and winning the tiebreak 7-6 (7-2). In the deciding game, the Ukrainian showed her character, winning 6-4. This allowed Marta to reach the third round of Wimbledon for the second time in her career.

Unfortunately, Daria Snigur was unable to repeat her compatriot’s success. In her debut match in the main draw of Wimbledon, she met world No. 14 Alyona Ostapenko from Latvia. The experience and skill of her opponent proved to be too much for the young Ukrainian. Snigur lost with a score of 3-6, 0-6, suffering her first defeat in four matches against the top 20 players in the WTA rankings.

Elina Svitolina finished the day for Ukrainian fans with a confident victory over German player Ule Niemayer. Despite a short rest period after the previous match, Svitolina demonstrated a high level of play. She won the first set 6-3, and in the second set, despite a slight aggravation at the end, she brought the match to a 6-4 victory. This victory took Elina to the third round of the tournament.

The day before, another Ukrainian tennis player, world No. 27 Diana Yastremska, defeated French tennis player of Russian origin Varvara Gracheva 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Thus, three Ukrainian tennis players – Marta Kostiuk, Elina Svitolina and Diana Yastremska – will continue their journey to Wimbledon 2024. In the next round, Kostiuk will face American Madison Keys, Svitolina will play against Tunisian Uns Jabir, and Yastremska will play against Croatian Donna Vekic.

Jastremska and Kostiuk are scheduled to play their matches today, 5 July, at approximately 13:00 and 15:00 Kyiv time. Svitolina will play tomorrow, at approximately 13:00.

Favourites and underdogs

According to bookmakers, Elina Svitolina has the best chance of winning the tournament among all Ukrainian tennis players – she has odds of 41 (or 4000). Marta Kostiuk and Diana Yastremska have odds of 101 (10,000) to win.

As you can see, Ukrainian tennis players are clearly not even among the top ten favourites of bookmakers. At the same time, all three Ukrainian players remaining in the tournament are among the top 30 tennis players in the world at the moment. In particular, Marta Kostiuk is ranked 19th in the WTA Women’s World Ranking, Elina Svitolina is 21st, and Diana Yastremska is 27th. This means that they all have the power to fight for victory. For example, last year’s Wimbledon was won by Czech Marketa Vondrousova, who was ranked 42nd in the world rankings at the beginning of the tournament.
