Church calendar for August 2024: when do we celebrate the feasts of Maccabiah, Apple and Walnut Savior?

The last month of summer is quite busy with holidays, both church and public. However, due to the transition to the new church calendar, there may be confusion about the dates of holidays that are important to believers. In August 2024, we will celebrate five major church holidays, including the Feast of Maccabee (Honey Savior), the Transfiguration of the Lord (Apple Savior), the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Transfer of the Non-Manufactured Image of Jesus Christ (Walnut Savior), and the Beheading of John the Baptist.

New church calendar for August 2024

on 1 September 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) switched to the New Julian calendar. As a result, most church holidays, including those with a fixed date, will be celebrated 13 days earlier. However, the exception to this rule is transitional holidays, the dates of which remain unchanged. So, below are the new dates of church holidays to be celebrated in August 2024:

1 August – the Feast of Maccabees (Honey Savior), the Feast of the All-Merciful Saviour (Savior) and the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Exaltation of the Holy Bones of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, the seven Maccabees martyrs, the mother of their martyr Solomon (Solomia) and their teacher, the martyr Eleazar, the beginning of the Assumption Fast;

2 August – the transfer of the relics of the holy martyr Stephen;

3 August – the holy relics of Isaac the Confessor, Dalmatus and Thaumatius;

4 August – the holy seven martyrs of Ephesus, the holy martyr Eudocia;

5 August – the Holy Martyr Eusebius of Antioch;

6 August – Transfiguration of the Lord (Apple Saviour).

7 August – the Holy Martyr Dometius, the Monks Pimen the Long-suffering, Pimen of the Caves and Pimen, Abbot, Monk of the Caves, and the Monk Mercurius of Kyiv-Pechersk;

8 August – Holy Confessor Emilian, Holy Martyrs Eleutherius and Leonidas, Bishop of Kyzylkiv, St Gregory, iconographer of Kyiv-Pechersk;

9 August – the Holy Apostle Matthias;

10 August – Martyrs Lawrence, Archdeacon, Sixtus II, Pope, Felikissimus and Agapitus, deacons, Martyr Romanus, of Rome;

11 August – Martyr Archdeacon Euplus, Monk Martyrs Theodore and Basil of Kyiv-Pechersk; Monk Theodore, Prince of Ostroh, of Kyiv-Pechersk;

12 August – Holy Martyrs Photius and Anikita; Holy Martyr Alexander, Bishop of Comana;

13 August – the Feast of the Transfiguration of St Maximus the Confessor;

14 August – Prophet Micah (of the 12 prophets), transfer of the relics of St Theodosius, Abbot of the Kyiv Caves, end of the Assumption Fast;

15 August – The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary;

16 AugustTransfer of the non-man-made image of Jesus Christ (the Nut Saviour), the martyr Diomedes the Physician;

17 August – the Holy Martyr Myron, St Alypius;

18 August – the martyrs Florus and Laurus;

19 August – the holy martyr Andrew Stratilat and 2593 others;

20 August – the Prophet Samuel;

21 August – the holy apostle Thaddeus, the holy martyr Vassa and her children, the martyrs Theognius, Agapius and Pistus;

22 August – the martyrs Agathonikos, Severian, Zotikos, Theoprepius (Bogolep), Akindindin, Zinon and others;

23 August – the Feast of the Assumption, the Holy Martyr Luppa, and the Holy Martyr Irenaeus of Lyons;

24 August – Martyr Eutychius, bishop, disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian, transfer of the relics of St Peter, Metropolitan of Kyiv, Wonderworker of All Rus;

25 August – the transfer of the relics of St Bartholomew (Nathanael), Apostle Titus, Bishop of Crete;

26 August – the holy martyrs Andrian and Natalia;

27 August – the Holy Monk Pimen the Great, the Monks Kuksha, Hieromonk, and Pimen the Fasting, of the Caves;

28 August – Saint Moses Murin, Saint Augustine of Hippo;

29 August – Beheading of John the Baptist;

30 August – Saints Alexander, John the Fasting Man and Paul the New, Patriarchs of Constantinople;

31 August – Laying on of the Holy Virgin’s Honourable Belt.

Thus, August is marked by many important church holidays for believers. During this period, believers have the opportunity to honour the memory of the saints, join traditional celebrations and purify themselves spiritually.
