On the night of 31 July, Ukraine suffered a large-scale attack by Russian drones. The attack on Kyiv, in particular, was one of the largest attacks on Ukrainian cities during the entire war, "Komersant Ukrainian" reported, citing official sources.
The Ukrainian Air Force and monitoring channels reported the movement of attack UAVs towards Ukrainian territory. Air alert was in effect in many regions of Ukraine throughout the night. The situation was particularly tense in Kyiv and the region, where explosions were heard and air defences were activated.
The attacks came in waves, and even in the morning, enemy drones continued to move towards the capital. The Air Force also warned of a threat to Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia regions.
The Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA) reported an unprecedented scale of the attack:
“Last night, the racists carried out one of the most massive attacks on Ukraine with attack drones in the entire war. And the main target of the aggressor was Kyiv,”
– officials said.
According to KMWA, this is the seventh drone attack on Kyiv in July, and the largest in terms of the number of UAVs used in 2024. In total, more than 40 drones were involved in the attack.
“…not a single drone achieved its goal… In total, more than four dozen enemy UAVs were shot down in the airspace of Kyiv and on the outskirts of the capital during these two waves. The exact figures will be provided by the Air Force. “In the face of such a dense and massive air attack, our air defence forces and means worked perfectly well. There are no casualties or damage in Kyiv at the moment!“
– added Serhiy Popko, Head of the Kyiv Military Air Defence Forces.
Popko also noted that the air alert lasted for more than seven hours, with enemy drones approaching Kyiv from different directions. In Kyiv region, a house caught fire due to falling drone fragments, but no one was injured.
