Liquefied gas prices in Ukraine rose to the maximum since the beginning of the year: what is the reason?

16 December 21:07

The average retail price of liquefied gas at Ukrainian gas stations rose to 37.14 UAH/liter, which corresponds to the level of the end of January 2025 and is one of the highest indicators since July 2022. This is reported by the publication enkorr with reference to the monitoring of the Consulting group “A-95”, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

The growth is due to an increase in the wholesale cost and seasonal factors, as well as local fuel shortages.

What is known

During the week from December 8 to 15, the average price of LPG at filling stations increased by 2.01 UAH/liter, reaching 37.14 UAH/liter, reports the edition enkorr with reference to the monitoring of the Consulting Group “A-95”.

The rise in prices is attributed to a jump in the purchase price at the Ukrainian Energy Exchange on December 10 and delays in fuel deliveries. Gas of domestic producers at a certain moment rose in price by 3.52-3.84 UAH/liter, up to 35.59-36.53 UAH/liter.

The average wholesale price rose by UAH 4,910/t (UAH 2.70/l) over the week to reach UAH 62,700/t (UAH 34.42/l).

Influencing factors

  • Seasonality: Lower air temperature increases gas density, which adds about 0.81 UAH/liter to the cost.
  • Local networks of filling stations:
    • OKKO and WOG increased prices by 2×1 UAH/l to 38.99 UAH/l.
    • SOCAR added 2-4 UAH/l depending on the region (37.98-38.98 UAH/l).
    • “Ukrnafta increased the ceiling by 2.5-3 UAH/l, to 35.99-37.99 UAH/l, with the lowest prices in Odessa region.
    • UPG raised prices by 1.90-2.80 UAH/l (36.80-37.90 UAH/l).

In November, total imports of diesel, gasoline and LPG amounted to 946,000 tons, which repeats the record volumes of August 2024 and December 2022. These figures indicate strong demand and active supplies despite the impact of the war and European sanctions on Russian fuel.

What are the implications

Rising LPG prices increase household and business costs, especially for heating and transportation. The price increase may stimulate additional gas imports and adjustments to the pricing policy of filling stations in the regions.
