Cyclone hits Ukraine: traffic restrictions imposed on roads

8 January 23:20

Due to a sharp deterioration in weather conditions and an active cyclone moving from the western regions, traffic restrictions were introduced on certain sections of Ukrainian roads on January 8. This was announced by Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksiy Kuleba, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, road services across the country are working in an enhanced mode. More than 970 units of special equipment and more than a thousand workers are involved in eliminating the consequences of bad weather.

“Road services across the country are working in enhanced mode to eliminate the consequences of heavy snowfalls. The Agency has an operational team that coordinates work on roads of national importance in order to respond as quickly as possible to traffic complications,” Kuleba said.

Where the situation is most difficult

According to the minister, weather conditions vary significantly depending on the region.

Western Ukraine is experiencing heavy snowfall, and equipment is working in an enhanced mode, especially on mountain passes.

Northern and central regions — freezing rain and black ice.

The east and northeast are experiencing rain, which is complicating the road situation.

The main impact of the storm is currently in the western and part of the central regions.

“The storm is moving through the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and Chernivtsi regions. The cyclone will then move towards the Kyiv region,” the minister said.

Operational teams are monitoring the most problematic sections of the roads around the clock, particularly on the approaches to the capital, in order to respond promptly to a sharp deterioration in weather conditions.

Appeals to drivers

Earlier, the State Emergency Service called on Ukrainians to refrain from traveling on Friday, January 9, if possible, due to significantly worsening weather conditions.

Drivers are asked to be especially careful, observe speed limits, and not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
