The Ukrainian onion market is experiencing another fluctuation in prices: after a recent decline, the cost of products has risen again. However, according to EastFruit Weekly Ukraine project coordinator Oleksandr Khorev, there are no grounds for a long-term rise in prices. The main reason for the price change is a decrease in the supply of quality onions on the market.
“When the price of a product rises or falls, it is the result of only one factor – fluctuations in supply. That is, the supply of onions on the market has slightly decreased compared to previous weeks.
Why? The onion harvesting campaign usually takes place in August and September, and it is no longer in the fields, it is already in storage. But this year, there are still a lot of onions in the fields, and most of them are of very poor quality, because they were not grown with a professional approach, but only with the expectation of mass production. And there are a lot of such cases this season, some onions will not even be harvested because they are already sprouting.
And such onions that could be sold were sold, and the price went down the previous week – the wholesale price was up to 5-10 hryvnias, depending on the quality and volume of the batch. And now the wholesale price has risen to 7-13 hryvnias per kg, because the demand for these poor quality onions has completely disappeared and buyers are not buying them. They know that they can’t take too much of it, it will simply spoil, even in a short time,” the analyst said.
According to Oleksandr Khorev, the farms that have high-quality onions have mostly stored them and bring only small batches to the market. This created a temporary shortage.
“And the very high-quality onions that farmers have already harvested, they put them in storage back in September, and they only supply the market in small batches, under preliminary agreements, on the network – higher quality products can go there. And it is this reduction in the total supply that has given buyers an impetus to look for better quality products, for which they had to pay a higher price,” emphasized Mr. Khoreva.
Experts predict that the growth will not be long-lasting: there are enough onion stocks in the country, so no significant price jumps are expected until the New Year.
“The price has risen slightly, but we do not believe that this upward trend will continue. Therefore, I will say it again – there is a lot of onions, there is even an unharvested area of onions, there are onions that have been harvested, but they need to be sold in the near future, because they will not survive until the second half of the marking season, after the New Year. It may not last even a month and a half in terms of its quality and will need to be sold.
So, according to preliminary data, it is this number of offers that will prevent prices from going up quickly in the near future, as we believe. Everyone can be calm in terms of onion prices until the New Year,” the analyst concluded.
