In March, the “Blood Moon” will appear in the sky: when and where to observe a unique phenomenon
11 March 2025 02:30
On the night of March 13-14, a rare astronomical event will take place – a total lunar eclipse known as a Blood Moon. The moon will turn a red hue when the Earth, its satellite, and the Sun line up in a single line. This eclipse will be the first total eclipse in two and a half years. It is reported by ScienceAlert, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs
Why does the Moon turn “bloody”?
According to NASA, during a total lunar eclipse, the Earth completely covers the Moon from direct sunlight, causing its surface to turn a dark red color. This is due to the refraction of light in our planet’s atmosphere – the sun’s rays pass through the Earth’s atmosphere, scattering and leaving only red hues on the Moon.
According to NASA, the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. At first, it will look like it has been “bitten off” on one side. Over time, the satellite will turn dark red. Then the eclipse will develop in the opposite order: the red color will gradually disappear, and the dark part of the Moon will shrink until it looks normal.

How long will the eclipse last and when will it be observed?
According to scientists, the total eclipse will last 6 hours and 3 minutes. The phase when the Moon turns a bright red hue will last 65 minutes. The maximum phase of the eclipse will occur at 9:59 Kyiv time, and the eclipse will end at 10:31.

In Ukraine, the Moon will be red for a little over an hour, but not as dark as during other eclipses. The best viewing conditions will be in regions with minimal light pollution and clear skies.
How to see the eclipse?
The total lunar eclipse will be visible to the naked eye.
It is best to look at the Moon in open areas, away from city lights and other light sources. For a more detailed view of the eclipse, you can use a telescope or binoculars.
When is the next eclipse?
Another total lunar eclipse will occur in September, followed by another in March.
