The Ukrainian state owes UAH 66 billion to domestic pensioners. First Deputy Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Daryna Marchak said this on the Chronicle of the Economy podcast, Kommersant Ukrainian reports

“The problem of court judgement arrears is very big today. I would say that this is a “sword of Damocles” over the pension system,”

– the official said.

According to her, the state has no current debts, but pensioners often go to court with demands for pension recalculation. And when the courts make the appropriate decision to recalculate, they oblige the state to pay pensions for the previous 5-10 years. This is how arrears accumulate.

More than half of this debt, 57%, is made up of recalculations for former security forces and military personnel, and 26% is the case of the Chernobyl victims.

The total public debt of Ukraine at the beginning of 2024 was USD 145.32 billion. THE TOTAL PUBLIC DEBT OF UKRAINE WAS 145.32 BILLION US DOLLARS. Over the past year, it increased by USD 33.87 billion (or more than 30%) and reached a historic high for the entire period of Ukraine’s recent independence. uSD 41.80 billion of this amount is domestic debt, i.e. the state’s debt to its own citizens and organisations.
