A fire broke out in Poland at the National Center for Nuclear Research. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to RMF FM and Polish Radio.

The center is located in Otwock near Warsaw. According to media reports, the fire was caused by a gas explosion in a laboratory rented by a third-party company.

Two people were injured in the fire. There is no radiological risk, as the fire occurred at a considerable distance from the research reactor.

Grzegorz Krzysztośek, deputy director of the center, also told Polish Radio that the incident occurred far from the nuclear reactor, in a technical building in the basement. He suggests that the fire most likely occurred because “someone made a mistake.”

The National Center for Nuclear Research is one of the largest research institutes in Poland, including the only nuclear research reactor MARIA in Poland. It was first activated and reached criticality for the first time on December 18, 1974.

The task of the MARIA reactor is to produce neutrons rather than electricity. It produces radioisotopes for cancer diagnostics and radiation therapy, as well as innovative materials for industry. It also conducts basic and applied research in the field of materials physics, as well as training for the nuclear and radiological protection industries.
