Trump’s team announced the US claims to Greenland, including by force
6 January 09:29
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said that Greenland should become part of the United States as part of the American security system. He did not rule out a military takeover of the island.
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to his comment for CNN.
“The president has been clear for months: The United States should be a nation that includes Greenland as part of our common security apparatus… Greenland should be part of the United States… No one is going to fight (with the United States – ed.) militarily over the future of Greenland,” he said.
When the host directly asked if military intervention was ruled out, Miller evaded the question and instead questioned Denmark’s claim to the Arctic territory.
“What are their territorial claims based on? What is the basis for their claim that Greenland is a colony of Denmark? (The United States – ed.) is a NATO power. In order for (the United States – ed.) to ensure the security of the Arctic region, to protect NATO’s interests, Greenland obviously has to be part of the United States, and so this is an issue that we will discuss as a country,” he summarized.
What preceded it
As a reminder, after US President Donald Trump returned to power, he started talking about his desire to annex Greenland.
In recent months, perhaps even six months, such statements have stopped. However, the other day, the wife of Trump’s Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller, Katie, posted a map on social media showing the island of Greenland colored in the colors of the US flag.
After that, Trump resumed his statements about Greenland and said the other day that America needs the island for defense. He also said that Greenland is allegedly “surrounded” by the navies of Russia and China.
It is not yet clear how this will end, but Politico’s interlocutors believe that the United States could take control of Greenland in the coming months.
It is worth adding that Denmark has repeatedly reacted to Trump’s statements. In particular, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that if the United States tries to seize Denmark, especially by military means, it will effectively put an end to the NATO alliance.
