Cardiac surgeon kidnapped in Kyiv, injected with ‘poison’ and extorted $2 million

In Kyiv, two men kidnapped a cardiac surgeon and demanded $2 million in ransom, but the doctor did not have that kind of money. This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
According to the investigation, the attackers agreed to kidnap the doctor for ransom. When the victim was passing by a house in Kyiv, a car drove up to him, from which unknown men got out.
“One of them introduced himself as a law enforcement officer. The suspects forced the victim to get into the car, put a black bag over his head and injected him with an unknown substance in his leg. They told the doctor it was ‘poison’. After that, they demanded that he hand over USD 2 million for providing the “antidote”,
– the report says.
Realising that the man did not have such money, the attackers searched him and took 15,000 hryvnias in his bag. The kidnappers then dropped the doctor off at Sovski Ponds in Kyiv and disappeared.
In the course of operational and investigative measures, law enforcement officers identified two men who were served a notice of suspicion. The location of his accomplice is being established.



The National Police noted that the accomplices, hiding from the police, changed their licence plates and cars several times.
Investigators conducted a number of searches at their places of residence, during which they seized vehicles, radios and communications equipment, as well as hunting rifles and ammunition.
The Solomianskyi District Court of Kyiv imposed on one of them a custodial measure of restraint.




Under the procedural supervision of the Solomianskyi District Prosecutor’s Office, investigators served the criminals a notice of suspicion under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- ч. 2 Art. 146 – illegal deprivation of liberty or abduction of a person,
- ч. 4 Art. 186 – robbery committed under martial law,
- ч. 4 Art. 189 – extortion of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The offenders face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
